Ballard ARINC-429 PXIe Avionics Interface Module
The ARINC-429 (Part Numbers: 784802-01, 784804-01, 784803-01) PXIe Interface Module from Ballard (now available from National Instruments) provides a high-precision avionics data bus interface intended for different laboratory or system applications requiring precise communications, simulation, and monitoring of ARINC-429 data. This interface module is intended for integration in the PXI Express (PXIe) form factor providing direct communications between test station computers and aircraft systems utilizing the PXIe platforms made from NI.
This interface module has built-in intelligence which independently performs protocol tasks such as message scheduling, buffering, and time-tagging. Each ARINC-429 channel may be configured as either a transmitter or receiver with programmable bit rates for both low-speed (12.5 kbps) and high-speed (100 kbps) operation. Advanced capabilities include parametric waveforms which allow software control over transmit level, rise or fall times, and voltage levels. These capabilities allow the unit to be used for standard ARINC-429 communications or non-standard profile communications used in the modern avionics test and simulation environments.
The integrated timestamping and large number of error-detecting functions incorporated in the Ballard ARINC-429 PXIe card are critical for validating bus performance and integrity of the systems during qualification and production testing. Based on dual-core FPGA architecture, the module is capable of high channel counts and mixed protocols without undue strain on the host processor allowing efficient real-time operation. Synchronization is effected by IRIG, PPS, or 10 MHz timing inputs providing time synchronization of any multiple instruments and/or test systems.
This interface is used extensively in aircraft system integration laboratories or flight simulation environments and also in production test stands. Communication verification of avionics systems, emulations of equipment and total bus performance are all addressed via this interface. It is compatible with CoPilot software for visualization purposes with automated operation provided via NI LabVIEW drivers. This module provides significant benefits for both test engineers and software developers who require the ability to access avionics communications buses.
